Unfortunately for property buyers 4 of the top 5 schools sit on the inner North and South or Cairns which makes it difficult for families leaving north of Smithfield to consider the top 5 schools for their kids.

Located in the suburb of Yorkeys Knob, this school goes from Prep to year 6. It is a state school run by Education Queensland and most students are from the local catchment. Yorkey’s is one of Cairns North’s established beachside suburbs that boast a esplanade, marina and swimmable beach. Yorkeys Knob State School operates under an equidistant catchment area. For families looking to relocate to Yorkeys Knob houses prices range between $400,000 -$500,000 on the lower end and $600,000 – $800,000 is the upper end of the market.

Goondi State School is a prep to year 6 primary school situated in Innisfail in the heart of the beautiful Cassowary Coast. It caters for some 400 students and has a wonderful blend of town and country children. The students are drawn from residential suburbs, small acreage properties and extensive banana and cane farms.

Note that Innisfail sits roughly 1-hour South East of Cairns and house prices start as low as $300,000 and the upper end of the market is around $600,000.

Located in Woree approximately 15 minutes from the CBD. The school has from Prep to year 12 co-education. Woree has long been considered a lower-socio economic suburb of Cairns however has been slowly gentrifying. The closet neighbouring suburbs are Mount Sheridan, Bentley Park and Bayview Heights. Houses on the lower end in these suburbs are between $400-550k and the upper end of the market between $700,000-$800,000.

Located on the inner North of Cairns roughly 10 minutes from the CBD in a suburb called Freshwater. Freshwater is a leafy green established neighbourhood in Cairns with a good demographic mainly baby boomer. This is a Queensland Government run school that has co-education from prep to year 6.

House prices in freshwater start around $500,000 and the high end of the market is around $800,000. Its closet suburbs are Stratford, Brinsmead, and Redlynch.

Located in Earlville which is a suburb on the inner-south of Cairns roughly 10 minutes from the CBD. Earlville is one of Cairn’s oldest and most established suburbs and is an area that’s going through significant gentrification over the last 5 years.

House prices in Earlville generally range between $400,000 – $600,000 and its closet neighbouring suburbs include Bayview Heights, Woree, and Westcourt.
